Is Your MailerLite Account Actually Set Up Properly? Here's How to Find Out

July 04, 20263 min read

A lot of business owners have a MailerLite account. Fewer have one that's properly set up.

There's a difference, and it matters more than you might think.

A MailerLite account you created, imported your list into, and haven't touched since isn't the same as one that's configured correctly from end to end. The first one exists. The second one actually works.

So how do you know which one you've got?

What a properly set up MailerLite account actually looks like

A complete MailerLite setup covers six distinct areas. Here's a quick overview of each.

1. Account foundations

This is the groundwork. Your sender name and email address are configured so subscribers know who the email is from. Your timezone is set correctly so scheduled campaigns go out when you actually want them to. Your physical address or PO box is added to the account (required by law, more on that in a moment). Your brand kit, logo and campaign defaults are in place so you're not starting from scratch every time you create something.

2. Legal and compliance

This one catches a lot of people off guard. Australia's Spam Act requires every commercial email you send to include a physical address and a working unsubscribe link. These aren't optional, they're legal requirements.

Authentication (SPF, DKIM and DMARC) also lives here. Without it, your emails are at risk of landing in spam or not arriving at all. And if any of your subscribers are based in the EU or UK, GDPR adds another layer with consent fields on signup forms.

3. List health

Your subscriber list is only as good as the data in it. This means your list is imported and cleaned, duplicates are removed, and you're confident that everyone on it has genuinely consented to receive emails from you.

4. Signup and growth

You need at least one active way for new people to join your list, whether that's a form on your website, an embedded signup, a pop-up, or a landing page. And it needs to be tested. Submitting your own email address and checking that you appear in your subscriber list is a two-minute job that a lot of people skip.

5. Automation

A welcome sequence is one of the highest-value things you can set up in MailerLite, and it's one of the most commonly left in draft. If yours is sitting there unactivated, new subscribers are joining your list and hearing nothing. That's not a great first impression.

6. Templates and campaigns

A branded email template means you're not building every campaign from scratch. It should reflect your brand, include your footer with your physical address and unsubscribe link, and be checked in mobile view as well as desktop.

Why most DIY setups have gaps

Setting up each of these areas properly takes time, and it requires knowing where to find the settings. A lot of business owners get partway through, get stuck, or assume things are working when they're not.

The most common gaps I see are missing authentication, a welcome automation sitting in draft, and a signup form that was built but never published or tested.

Each of these is fixable. But you have to know they're there first.

How to find out where your account stands

I built a free self-audit tool that covers all six areas of a MailerLite setup. Work through it at your own pace, and you'll get an instant score with tailored next steps at the end. It takes about 10 minutes.

Take the free MailerLite audit: empress-mailerlite-audit.subscribepage.io

If your audit reveals gaps and you'd rather hand it over than fix it yourself, the Empress MailerLite Setup is a done-for-you service that covers everything from start to finish, including a 30-minute handover session so you know exactly how to use your account when I hand it back.
