The One Email You Should Set Up Before Your Next Newsletter

September 02, 20263 min read

Let me guess. You spend a good chunk of time each month agonising over your newsletter. What to write, what to link, whether that subject line's too cheeky or not cheeky enough. You hit send, breathe a sigh of relief, and then start the worry all over again a few weeks later. Meanwhile, the single most valuable email you'll ever send sits completely unwritten.

It's your welcome email. And most business owners don't have one.

Here's why that matters so much. When someone signs up to your list, that's the most interested they're ever going to be in you. They've just read something, nodded along, and thought "yes, I want more of this." They've handed over their email address, which in 2026, with inboxes as protected as they are, is no small thing.

They're leaning in, waiting to hear from you.

And what do most of us send them in that golden moment? Nothing. Silence. A tumbleweed rolling through their inbox until the next newsletter happens to go out, which might be three weeks away. By then they've forgotten who you are, forgotten why they signed up, and your carefully written newsletter lands like a message from a stranger.

A welcome email fixes all of that, and it does it automatically.

It doesn't need to be fancy or clever. At its simplest, a good welcome email does three things.

  • First, it reminds them who you are and why they're a great fit for your world.

  • Second, it tells them what to expect, so they know how often they'll hear from you and what sort of thing you'll send.

  • And third, it gives them a quick win, one small, generous, useful thing they can use straight away. That might be a favourite tip, a resource you swear by, or a link to your best blog post.

That's it. Who you are, what to expect, and a quick win. If you can write an email to a client, you can write this.

The real magic's in the word "automatically". This isn't an email you write fresh every time someone new joins. You build it once inside MailerLite (or your preferred email marketing platform) as an automation. From then on, every single new subscriber gets your welcome the moment they join, whether it's 2pm on a Tuesday or 3am on a Sunday while you're fast asleep.

You set it up one time, and it quietly does its job forever.

I've lost count of the number of accounts I've opened up to find hundreds of subscribers and not a single welcome email in sight. Every one of those people joined, heard crickets, and slowly went cold. It's such a shame, because it's genuinely one of the easiest things to fix in the whole of email marketing, and it makes such a difference to how people feel about you from day one.

Here's the mistake I see most often, though. People know the welcome email matters, so they wait until they've got the "perfect" one written. And while they wait, weeks turn into months, and new subscribers keep slipping through the cracks. A simple welcome email that actually exists will always beat a perfect one that's still living in your head. You can polish it later, once it's doing its job.

If you're reading this thinking "this all makes sense, but the word automation makes me want to lie down in a dark room," I totally understand. The strategy is the simple part. The tech is where people get stuck. Which button, which trigger, why on earth won't it turn green. That's exactly the bit that steals an afternoon and your good mood along with it.

That's what my MailerLite Setup Package is for. I'll set up your welcome email, or a full welcome sequence, properly, so every new subscriber gets a warm, on-brand hello from the moment they join, and you never have to think about it again.

Your newsletter can wait until next month. Your welcome email really shouldn't.

Ready to give every new subscriber a proper hello? My MailerLite Setup Package sorts the whole thing for you.
